Abstract

The article is devoted to the topical problem of cultural semantics of lexical units on the material of connotation viewed as a binding link between linguistic meaning and notions of culture. The research proposes two ways of interpreting cultural connotation: lexicographic and discursive. The lexicographic approach uses a procedure of step-by-step interpretation of deep layers of cultural semantics including the elements of metaphorization and symbolization of language units in the function of cultural signs. The analysis reveals the role of cultural commentary as an access to implied cultural meanings. Discursive approach relies on contextual commentary and discloses changes in cultural meanings and value components actualized by linguistic units.
