Abstract

The study introduces the concept of temporal regulation as a cognitive-pragmatic mechanism that ensures the hierarchy, prioritization and coordination of goals with reference to the moment of their actualization. The object of the analysis is the internal dynamics of the formation and implementation of speech goals, depending on the temporal perspective and context of communication. The purpose of the work is to present temporality as a regulator of the hierarchy and actualization of goals in the structure of the speaker's act. In speech interaction, goals are not fixed: they undergo modifications, are clarified, replaced depending on external circumstances and the cognitive activity of the speaker at the pre-verbal stage of the speech act. The paper proposes a typology of goals based on the criterion of their temporal characteristics and describes the tools of temporal regulation: ordering, modification, verbalization, anticipation and de-actualization. The research material in the form of dialogues is withdrawn from works of English and American fiction of the 20-21st centuries, on the basis of which it is determined how the speaker structures their speech depending on time assessment and forecasts. Special attention is paid to the connection of temporal regulation with the logical-pragmatic structure of the utterance, as well as the role of assessing situational conditions when choosing a speech strategy. Temporal regulation not only forms the structure of the utterance, but also directs speech behavior in accordance with the dynamics of the communicative situation. This approach allows to consider goal-setting as a flexible, time-controlled system, where the choice of speech means is subordinated to both the internal attitudes of the subject and the extra-linguistic conditions of communication. The results of the study reveal the potential of speech act analysis through the prism of time as a cognitive category, which opens up new prospects in the linguistics of goal-setting.
