A special authorial term in popular science discourse

Context and relevance. The study of translation problems from the perspective of discourse analysis is becoming one of the most significant paradigms in modern translation theory and practice (Volkova, 2010; Kobozeva, 2011; Shevchenko, 2022). In this regard, the aim and research objectives are focused on identifying the features of the discursive nature of the translation object and the factors that constitute the essential characteristics of the translation process. The relevance of the present study is conditioned by the need to analyze the semantics of authorial terms in popular science discourse and to determine the correctness of their understanding by the target audience. As an analytical framework, this article employs the translation interpretation of the English terminological units interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences and their translation correlates, which have not gained wide distribution in domestic research, unlike the central term of H. Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences. Objective. To analyze the processes of encoding and recoding of authorial English terms in popular science discourse (Cheremisova, 2023; Bobykina, 2024; Anisimova, Kosarina, Fedotova, 2021; Kosarina, 2024), taking into account the polyfunctionality that determines its essential properties (Karasik, 2000; Gnedko, 2014; Bessonova, 2016; Bagiian, 2014; Vorontsova, 2014; Karpilovich, 2018; Saifullina, 2022; Van Dijk, 2008; Manfredi, 2019; Atkinson, 1999; Mayer, 2008), based on the material of the English terms interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences. Hypothesis. During cross-linguistic recoding of an authorial term, a certain "blurring" of the boundaries of the term's conceptualization is possible, and consequently, its deconceptualization when transferred to a foreign scientific community. This occurs due to the specifics and certain differences in the interpretation of related scientific concepts within the subject area, in particular, the theory of intelligence. Methods and materials. The linguosemiotic approach of the present study is based on the use of complementary methods. Conceptual analysis identifies and systematizes the features of the formation and consolidation of a concept within a specific conceptual field. Definitional analysis allows for the identification of the essential conceptual features of a term. Contextual analysis demonstrates how a scientific concept is formed and consolidated in scientific and popular science discourse. Semantic analysis is applied for the systemic study of a term's meaning in its connections with other elements of the terminological system. Results. The research shows that the terminological units interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence function in popular science discourse as a tool for popularizing elements of the author's concept, in accordance with the functional orientation of popular science discourse (Arutyunova, 1999; Odintsov, 1982; Shevchenko, 2022; Vorontsova, 2013; Diveeva, 2015). Conclusions. According to the analysis of terms in English popular science discourse and their representation in translations, the discursive and linguosemiotic characteristics of the terms serve as the basis for interpretation and, consequently, for the development of translation techniques. Their properties are determined by the polyfunctionality of the discourse and, most of all, by the function of knowledge popularization.
