Abstract

Context and relevance. The syntax of Dagestani languages remains a lacuna, not conforming to the canons of the accepted syntactic theory. The syntactic theory of ergative languages dictates its own laws, which should form the basis of a new, communicative theory. Objective. To determine the grounds for distinguishing the main, principal parts of a sentence that, neither in terms of semantics nor in terms of grammatical features, resemble the subject and predicate in languages of the nominative typology. Hypothesis. In the ergative Rutul language, there is no subject in the sense commonly used in syntax; here, the role of the subject is performed by a semantic subject, which we define by its role in the sentence as the subject argument. Methods and materials. In preparing the material, a descriptive method, a typological method, and an anthropocentric method were used. Results. The result of this study is the conclusion that when analyzing such an important component of syntax as the subject, it is necessary to draw on material not only from syntactic but also from semantic features in order to identify the main constituent of the sentence in ergative languages. Conclusions. In the ergative Rutul language, the subject performs the role of the subject in several cases, which is why the term “subject argument” should be introduced into the theory of syntax of ergative languages.
