M.Yu. Lermontov’s “Duma” in historical and literary context: the title and genre memory

Context and relevance. The relevance of this study lies in the need to examine the poetics of the title of Mikhail Lermontov’s poem Duma (“The Thought”) the literary process of the 1810s–1840s, contemporary debates on Russia’s historical destiny, and the development of Lermontov’s poetic system. Particular attention is paid to the reinterpretation of the duma tradition, associated with the historical and folk-poetic tradition of Kondraty Ryleev and further developed in the works of Alexey Koltsov and Ivan Turgenev. The aim of this study is to identify the specific features of the title Duma with regard to its historical and cultural context, literary tradition, and the development of Lermontov’s late poetic style. Materials and methods. The study examines Lermontov’s poem Duma, poems with the same title by Ryleev, Koltsov, and Turgenev, as well as Lermontov’s The Cossack Lullaby and Prayer. The study employs historical-literary and comparative methods, along with approaches to the analysis of title poetics. Results. The study identifies the semantic emphases of the title Duma, which connect the poem with the traditions of the historical and civic duma, Romantic meditation, and folk poetry. Lermontov’s reinterpretation of the genre designation is shown to be associated with the themes of the fate of his generation, national community, and moral and religious values. Conclusions. The title Duma establishes the poem’s mode of tragic reflection on the contemporary generation while also addressing the reader directly. Comparison with The Cossack Lullaby and Prayer makes it possible to regard these poems as a conventional generic triptych united by the themes of national community and spiritual quest. In Duma, Lermontov reinterprets the genre tradition by combining elegiac, satirical, and oratorical elements.
