The role of resilience in the framework of responsible parenting
Abstract
Context and relevance. Families face a multitude of social risks and internal structural changes, which increases the burden on parents and diminishes their emotional resources. Effective coping with difficulties is possible through resilience. Alongside the “traditional” type of parenting, non-normative (alternative) types are emerging—namely, “responsible parenting”—which remains insufficiently studied due to its novelty and the conceptual and methodological ambiguity surrounding it, particularly in relation to parental resilience. This underscores the relevance of the problem. Objective. The aim of the article is to present a theoretical model of responsible parenting, developed by the authors based on an analysis of Russian and international research. Hypothesis. The theoretical hypothesis posits that responsible parenting may be conceptualized as a model incorporating components of resilience and components of parenting. Methods and materials. The research materials comprised scientific articles from the Web of Science (core collection) and ScienceDirect databases, as well as from the Psyjournals.ru and Google Scholar collections, selected using the keywords “parental resilience” and related terms across two time periods: 2005–2015 (17 works) and 2016–2024/25 (17 works). The theoretical methods employed included comparative and critical analysis of existing approaches, identification of contradictions, synthesis, modeling, and systematization of concepts. Results. The results showed that “responsible parenting” can be conceptualized as an active agentive stance of parents and represented as a framework comprising both components of parental resilience and components of parenting. The agentive stance of the parent may include cognitive and affective components. Conclusions. It was shown that resilience, as an integral three-component personal competence, can be characterized as either active or reactive. Responsible parenting is conceptualized as an active agentive stance of parents toward the upbringing and development of the child; it includes both parenting components and components of parental resilience. The study of these components opens up potential directions for psychological support for families with children and for expanding research on the variability of family upbringing practices.
