The Development of Gender Identity in Modern Boys and Girls in the Context of Socio-Psychological Development of Personality

9071

Abstract

In this article the gender identity is considered from the social constructionism position, it is viewed as a product of social construction and at the same time as one of the key factors mediat-ing behavioral activity and personal attitudes in the context of interpersonal relations. The results of the empirical research in which 18-22 years old students have participated are summarized. The results indicate that the combination of masculine and feminine traits, their correspondence in the integrated gender identity system, regardless of their gender represents a more balanced standard which is more adjusted to the life in the modern society than the rigid standardization of gender roles. We also show that among boys and girls without strong masculine or feminine traits the gender identity is not defined, which leads to a denial of self-realization in the society and dissatisfaction with themselves.
