Psychological states in mothers of children with cerebral palsy as starting points of a psychological syndrome

Abstract

Birth of a child with movement disorders ruins family’s hopes for his/her successful future and the character and degree of difficulty of a child’s disability directly influence parents’ emotional state and behavior. Emotional and personal sphere of the mother as the primary caregiver is the most prone to changes. Reappraisal of life meanings and values, discontinuity and loss of integrity of internal life take place and directly affect the mother’s psychological state. The article provides comparative analysis of psychological status of mothers of children with movement disorders and mother of children with normal development. The empirical research was based on Gomel regional center for correctional-developing education and rehabilitation, Gomel preschool facilities # 49 and #152. The structure of psychological syndrome and its preconditions in mothers of children with movement disorders as well as the core components of that syndrome are described.
