Abstract

The paper presents results of the research on collective memory and, in particular, on the collective memories about the political power in Tsarist Russia, in Soviet Russia and Perestroika shared by respondents of various age and occupation. Representatives of three social groups took part in the research: students, working adults and retired persons. The data was collected using the techniques developed by the author and aimed at revealing the individual's subjective assessment of historical events and political power at different stages of Russia's historical development. The outcomes showed significant differences between the assessments of political power in the chosen historical periods provided by the representatives of different social groups; also, these assessments differ a lot from the respondents' notions of ideal political power in almost every characteristic. Political power as it was in the USSR reached the maximum number of positive correlations with the ideal. Among the most personally significant events of that period the central one for all generations of respondents was the Great Patriotic War (World War II).
