Abstract

The author addresses the issue of formation and development of the institute of religion in Russian society in the context of the theory of psychosocial development. With Orthodox Christianity as an example of a dominating confession in Russia, the paper analyzes the functionality of the institute from the perspective of its ability to support basic trust in the society. As it is shown, in the process of cultural-historical development Russian Orthodox Christianity has actually lost its initial institutional vitality and nowadays mostly fulfills the role of ideological support for the state. The author further illustrates the main stages and reasons of such transformation with concrete historical facts exploring the matter from the point of view of the psychosocial approach to development.
