Adaptation of the Russian-language version of the Dual Filial-Piety Scale (DFPS-RU)
Abstract
Context and relevance. Against the backdrop of global growth in life expectancy and population ageing, the study of intergenerational relations is becoming increasingly pertinent. However, Russian scholarly discourse lacks a universal diagnostic instrument for examining the variability of care for older adults.
Objective. To adapt for Russian-speaking populations a contemporary version of the 'Dual Filial-Piety Scale', originally developed by Asian scholars.
Methods and materials. The scale was translated and subsequently administered to 363 respondents from the Karachay-Cherkess Republic (Karachay students, including 225 women and 138 men; mean age = 20,64 years).
Results. Psychometric evaluation of the Russian adaptation yielded significant results confirming the replicability of the original measure's two-factor structure — authoritarian and reciprocal respect toward elders. The findings demonstrate good psychometric properties, evidenced by structural model parameters and scale reliability indices. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) indicated a good fit for the original two-factor model. Furthermore, this study extends the application of the Eastern filial piety construct to Western cultural contexts while accounting for sample-specific cultural characteristics.
Conclusions. The adapted Russian version demonstrates satisfactory psychometric properties and can serve as a valid research instrument for investigating respect towards elders and intergenerational communication phenomena.
