Theories of early intervention: An integrative model perspective
Abstract
Studies in the field of early intervention has led over the past decades to interdisciplinary programs for infants and young children and their families, and programs aimed to promote children’s mental health. The definition of early care for young children and their families, included in the Federal Law of the Russian Federation, combines characteristics of these directions of early intervention, which corresponds to observed in the literature trend to discuss them in a joint scientific field. This work is aimed analyzing studies representing different theoretical principles and models of early intervention, discussing them taking into account additional research information and presenting a unified theoretical model of early intervention. The results show that, with different theoretical approaches in the field of early intervention, there is a common understanding of the variety of factors affecting a child’s development and well-being, the importance of attention to the family as the leading context of development, to the context of the child’s relationships. The presented integrative model combines principles of both interdisciplinary early intervention, focused on reducing the impact of potential stressors for families, and infant mental health intervention, aimed at improving the quality of interaction and relationships in the parent-child system.
