Abstract

The article describes the results of an experimental study about the effectiveness of the use of student-generated content for teaching a foreign language. The participants were invited to take part in a discussion of films made by their group-mates or students from other departments on the platform https://ed.ted.com. The teachers who initiated a study created teaching aids found here: https://ed.ted.com/on/aUrQFq2u. Using the interactive digital tools, students under the teachers’ supervision could practice different types of speech activities depending on their level of language proficiency, the degree of interest in the content or the authorship of the content. The results of the study showed that the use of such ideas as educational tools has a positive impact on students’ motivation to learn a foreign language, invokes empathy, develops their communication skills in international environment as well as the ability to analyze and work effectively in a team. Multiple involvement in foreign language environment at the stage of the film production and then at the stage of its consumption, contributes to a deeper immersion into the content, hence, increases the effectiveness of learning. The study also proved that such experiments may be viewed as positive experience in the use of digital technologies in the educational environment.
