Problems in Learning Among University Students Studying Using Distance Learning Technologies

Abstract

The article presents the results of a comparative study of the problems faced by university students studying with and without distance learning technologies in the learning process. To study the problems, a questionnaire method was used: students were asked to rate a list of 32 problems compiled on the basis of an analysis of literature and student appeals to the university administration. The study was conducted at the Faculty of Psychology of the Moscow Institute of Psychoanalysis in the spring semester of the 2023-2024 academic year. The study involved 698 people, including 302 distance learning students and 396 full-time students. The results of the study showed that, in general, distance learning students are significantly less likely to encounter learning problems than full-time students. The most common problems of distance learning students are lack of time, as well as lack of attention, they are often distracted and put off studying for later. The most common problems of full-time students are an inconvenient schedule, as well as difficulties in self-organization of educational activities: planning and implementing independent work. The article suggests that the nature of the problems encountered by distance learning students may be due to both the characteristics of the students and the specifics of the organization of the distance learning format. It is noted that the results obtained differ from the data collected during the COVID-19 pandemic, which may be due to the fact that the respondents independently chose the distance learning format for themselves. In this regard, it is indicated that there is no need for further study of situational and personal predictors of problems in the learning of students studying using distance learning technologies.
