Abstract

Context and relevance. Intelligence is a significant predictor of productivity and learning success. The use of diagnostic methods for intellectual abilities in psychological and pedagogical practice requires the identification of the possibilities and limitations of measurement techniques. Objective. To identify the prognostic possibilities of the methodology “Test of Intellectual Abilities for First Graders” (TISP) regarding the school success of preschoolers in elementary school. Hypothesis. The level of intellectual abilities in preschoolers, measured using the TISP methodology, is a fairly reliable predictor of their school success after two years. Methods and materials. The study was conducted in two stages in a longitudinal design format. The first stage involved 121 older preschool children (M = 6.9, SD = 0.8; 47% of boys). The intellectual abilities of preschoolers were assessed using the TISP methodology. Additionally, the school readiness was assessed through a specially organized interview. At the second stage, at the end of the second grade, school performance was recorded (N = 92). Results. The results confirmed the predictive capabilities of the TISP methodology regarding the success of preschool education in elementary school. Subtests were identified that were characterized by the closest correlation with success in mathematics, Russian, or reading. Conclusions. The study has been shown that the achieved level of intellectual abilities, measured using the TISP methodology in preschoolers entering the first grade, is a reliable predictor of their academic success after two years, while the interview result is not such a predictive indicator. With the help of TISP, it is possible to obtain indicative information about the possible difficulties/achievements of children in studying individual school subjects, which is important for carrying out preventive work before starting school and determining optimal educational conditions.
