Abstract

The paper presents an analysis of the principal coping strategies in people belonging to two related nations with different economic, political, and cultural settings: Byelorussians and Russians. A general characteristic of Byelorussians' coping behaviour is given, and its differences from the Russians' coping behaviour are demon¬strated. The subjective determinants of Byelorussians' and Russians' specific coping strategies are analysed, including hardiness, orientations to life meaning, locus of control, and psychological victimity. It is shown that Byelorussians' and Russians' key resource is hardiness, which enables them to withstand the most difficult life moments, promotes active coping, increases resilience to stress, fills life with meanings, activates searching behaviour, and helps to build an integral system of relationships to the world.
