Cradle of activity approach in psychology

Abstract

The paper presents comments to the archival material by A. N. Leontiev on the history of Kharkov psychological school. Inaccuracies are noted in the way the head of the school dates certain events of the period he describes, as well as his conscious failure to mention one Kharkov psychologist, A. I. Rozenblyum, for spe¬cific social and cultural reasons. Not limiting itself to the commentary genre, the present article uses specific examples to substantiate the hypothesis postulated earlier that views the Kharkov group as an independent school of thought, and as a research group that formed a part of the more general scientific school founded by L. S. Vygotsky. The previously unpublished personal letters of the Kharkov group members to A.N. Leontiev demonstrate how interpersonal relationships in their small group were mediated by their Common Cause, par¬ticularly that of developing in a creative way the idea of historic nature of the mind proposed by Vygotsky. The author comments upon A. N. Leontiev's evaluations of the Kharkov school input into psychological theory, practice, and development of the culture of experimentation.
