Subjective Action in Development

Abstract

The article focuses on the developmental cycle of the subjective action. Regarding the action as a developing reality is based upon the following ideas of Vygotsky's cultural-historical theory: the understanding of development as an interaction between the real and ideal forms of behaviour; the concept of interiorization as a developmental mechanism; the concept of gradual transition from the inter-form to the intra-form of action and sign-mediated character of this transition. The article describes several stages of the action model reviewed, such as: spontaneous activity; aggregate action; joint-distributed action; individual subjective action. The developmental outcome, which is defined as individual voluntary action, is discussed as well. It is suggest- ed that this outcome should not be considered a self-sufficient formation, but should be regarded in the con- text of further development possibilities. Thus, the concept of the functional-meaning domain is introduced.
