Abstract

Relatives of patients with addictive disorders, as a rule, make attempts to overcome the disease of a loved one, providing medical, social and psychological assistance to the patient, so they frequently act as an unpaid resource in the process of treatment and maintaining his/her well-being. At the same time, their efforts, as well as the state of their own mental and physical health, are often out of sight of specialists due to insufficient development of methodology and psychodiagnostic tools for assessment of the dynamics of relationships that arise in the process of caring for an addictive patient in the family. The “Level of Relatives’ Emotional Burnout” measure is aimed at studying the ratio between engagement and burnout during the process of caretaking in the field of family interaction. The aim of this study was to verify the factor structure of the “Level of Relatives’ Emotional Burnout” on the sample of 374 relatives of patients with substance (115 relatives of patients with opioid use disorder, 127 with alcohol use disorder, 37 with stimulant use disorder) and non-substance (95 relatives of patients with gambling) addiction. The factor structure of the questionnaire was carried out by confirmatory factor analysis. Indices of fit demonstrate high consistency with empirical data and confirm the design validity of the tool. Testing reliability of the questionnaire scales showed a good level of the Cronbach’s α coefficient for most indicators. The use of the tool will expand both diagnostic capabilities and perspectives of psychotherapy.
