Development of image thinking among deaf children

3037

Abstract

The contribution is dedicated to research of image thinking of deaf children - such characteristics of image thinking as logical operations with non-verbal material and creative thinking. The aim of the contribution was to describe the relations between indices of non-verbal intelligence and creative thinking in groups of deaf and non-deaf children. There were 18 deaf and 17 non-deaf children aged from 9 to 11 in the sample group. The children completed the “Raven’s Coloured Progressive Matrices” and “Williams’ Test of Divergent Thinking”. It is shown that non-verbal thinking operations of deaf children are developed at roughly the same level as those of their non-deaf peers, but the interrelations of indices of intelligence and creative thinking in the deaf group are conceptually different from the non-deaf group.
