Features of visual identification of 3–7 years old children with ASD
Abstract
The article is presented results of the study aimed to the analysis of peculiarities of visual object recognition in preschool children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Methods: In the current study 20 children with ASD, 10 children with Down syndrome and 20 typically developing children were assessed with a Visual cognitive tests battery, Psycho-educational profile (PEP3), and Childhood autism rating scale (CARS). Results: Our results reveal that children with autism were likely to have specificity in object recognition profile: big geometrical forms recognition difficulties, specific object recognition style relying on elementary features of objects, like a shape form, superior ability of identification of abstract high detailed pictures, difficulties in cross-modal perception, lack of object representation enrichment, using sensory information from different modalities.
