The Distinctive Features of the German Translations of Works by F.M. Dostoyevsky

Abstract

The article considers the distinctive features of the German translations of two works by F. M. Dostoyevsky “Crime and Punishment” and “Poor folk”. The author of the article studies two variations of German translations (“Schuld und Sühne” and “Rodion Raskolnikoff”, and also two translations with the similar name “Arme Leute”), moreover, the author takes into consideration the reproduction of the way of life and Russian view of world, characters’ speech, and that’s why explores the full representation of peculiarities that take place in German translations. During the examination and comparison lexical, syntactical and stylistic differences between the original texts and their translations are revealed. The methods of translation are studied in German works, and the author comes to a conclusion that the examined methods of translation allow to convey the way of life, depicted in the original works of the Russian writer. The author of the article also compares the German translations and finds out the differences on levels of language, the variety of methods of translation, which indicates the style of translators.
