Abstract

Context and relevance. The relevance of studying the concept of "sacrifice" is driven by the need to identify discursive variability in the context of the coexistence of secular and religious worldviews in contemporary Russia. Objective. To identify the features of the functioning of the concept of "sacrifice" in secular and Orthodox discourses. Hypothesis. The concept of "sacrifice" is perceived negatively in secular discourse, whereas in Orthodox discourse it is understood through a voluntary act of love and self-denial. Methods and materials. The material includes entries from explanatory and etymological dictionaries, data from the Russian National Corpus, Holy Scripture, patristic writings, Orthodox sermons, and akathists from the 20th–21st centuries. Etymological, componential, contextual, and comparative analyses were employed. Results. In secular discourse, the concept of "sacrifice" is understood predominantly negatively, as a senseless loss, suffering, or a result of violence. In Orthodox discourse, it is revealed through a voluntary act of love and self-denial in imitation of Christ, imbuing suffering with the highest meaning of salvation. Conclusions. The most characteristic examples of the verbalization of the concept of "sacrifice" are found in akathists to newly glorified saints (passion-bearers Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarevich Alexei, and Venerable Martyr Grand Duchess Elizabeth), where such semantic components as 'voluntariness', 'purity', 'sacrificial love', 'God-pleasing nature', and 'self-giving' are actualized.
