Abstract

Context and relevance. This article presents a literary reconstruction of the figure of A. S. Norov (1795–1869), Minister of Public Education, traveler, and man of letters, within the context of Russian epistolary and publicistic culture of the Nicholas I and post-reform eras. The aim of the study is to identify the specifics of Norov's intellectual and spiritual connections and their influence on the formation of early conservative discourse. Materials and methods. The material includes letters, travel sketches, and memoir evidence from contemporaries (N. V. Gogol, M. P. Pogodin, P. A. Vyazemsky, S. P. Shevyrev, A. S. Khomyakov, and St. Ignatius Brianchaninov). The method involves linguocultural and textological analysis of the epistolary heritage. The results show that Norov's linguistic picture of the world was characterized by a "double perspective" (conjugation of the Biblical East and Orthodox Moscow), organic use of Church Slavonic vocabulary, and a rhetorical strategy of "quiet persuasion". Conclusions. Norov played a key role in the genesis of conservative literature, proposing a model in which education was conceived as a continuation of faith, which was later inherited and transformed in the polemical texts of K. P. Pobedonostsev and F. M. Dostoevsky.
