Formation of modern youngsters’ gender identity

Abstract

The article discusses gender identity from the viewpoint of social constructivism, as a derivative of social constructing, and as one of key factors mediating behavioral activity and personal attitudes within the context of interpersonal relationships. There are reviewed findings of the empirical study at students aged 18 to 22. It was revealed that the mix of masculine and feminine characteristics, their combination in integral system of gender identity regardless of sex attribute, is more well-balanced and fitted into contemporary life conditions than rigid sex typing. Besides, it was also found out that those youngsters, who lack apparent masculine or feminine characteristics, have no gender identity, and that breeds denial of social self-realization and feeling of dissatisfaction with oneself.
