Adolescents and their parents: what are the values and what do they want today?

We present an empirical research on Moscow adolescents and their parents and analyze intentional aspects of mentality in two generations of contemporary Russians. The sample consisted of two groups: 30 high school students, aged 16-17 (12 girls and 18 boys), and 30 parents of adolescents, aged 37 to 49 years (7 men and 23 women). Correlation and factor analysis of value system and life goals in adolescents and their parents, carried out with consideration of gender factor, revealed points of convergence of goals and values, as well as the nature of their differences, reflecting the ongoing transformation in Russian society. Only about 10% of goals and values correlate in adolescents and their parents. The structure of purposes only partially follows the structure of values, which, in particular, is reflected in the fact that in adolescents as well as in adults, the factors revealed are primarily motivational (they are more common in adolescents) or predominantly concerned with values (they are more common in adults). This is indicative of the relative independence of these elements from structure of personal meanings.
