Psychological peculiarities of displays of personality’s stress resistance in extreme situations

The article examines the problem of psychological stability of a person in extreme situations. It presents theoretical provisions of displays of stability by fire officers and experimental research of psychological peculiarities of displays of personality’s stress resistance in extreme situations. Psychological stability is viewed as an open self-organizing system, as an integrating factor which is related to selection of corresponding decisions and formation of the most adequate behavior strategies. The hypothesis that psychological peculiarities of fire officers with term of service of more than 2 years are determined by low stress resistance, high level of anxiety, high probability of neuropsychic breakdowns, predominance of verbal forms of aggression, certain type of behavioral activity (constant strain of mental and physical forces in pursuit of success, unwillingness to do monotonous work, impulsivity, etc.), was proved. It was proved that fire officers show symptoms of emotional burnout which lead to professional risks. A conclusion is made that there is a need for psychological selection of fire officers for activity under extreme conditions taking into account the strength of nervous system, tolerance to irritants, level of anxiety, and inclination to risk.
