Abstract

The article provides reconstruction of G.H. Mead's theory of “Self” and analyses influence of this concept on psychological anthropology. It is focused on active character of interactions of “Self” with the other people that is the drive (moving force) of an individual's ontogenetic development. Particular emphasis of the research is made on the process of emerging of thinking as internal dialog and the role of active “Self” in the process of creating novelty in society. The article argues that G. H. Mead's ideas are topical for the state-of-art ethnopsychological research; shows types of influence of the concept of “Self” on studies in ethnic (cultural) identity. The author states that the most interesting use of G. H. Mead's ideas is the comparative analysis of psychological peculiarities of “Self” in eastern and western cultures.
