Abstract

The article describes the theory of "heroes and crowd" proposed by the prominent writer and scientist N.K. Mikhailovsky in the 1880s—1890s. It highlights its principal differences from the foreign theories of that time and focuses on the impact of Mikhailovsky's ideas on Russian researchers. The specifics of the crowd as a social formation, its tendency to imitate, social and psychological conditions of the crowd formation, the effects of the crowd on an individual, hyp-notic communication between leaders and subordinates — all these were among the issues that were of much interest to the author of the very first social psychological theory of crowd.
