Abstract

The present study is focused on the measurement of the development of the higher mental actions of analysis and planning as the main components of theoretical thinking by the teenager and young adulthood students. These mental actions were measured in individual and collaborative problem solving conditions by the specially elaborated ‘PL-modified’ computer game system. General intelligence was additionally assessed. Two independent studies were carried out on the samples of middle-school students (5-6th grades with 189 participants in total) and students of the faculty of psychology of education (242 participants). Higher game efficiency was revealed in collaborative problem solving conditions. The present results are discussed in terms of the prospects of the usage of ‘PL-modified’ computer game system as a diagnostic tool for mental actions by participants of different age and cognitive abitlities.
