Integrated Learning Based on Content as a Technology for the Formation and Development of Professional Foreign Language Communication Skills of Students of Non-linguistic Universities

Abstract

This article is devoted to the study of content-based integrated learning as a technology for the formation and development of professional foreign language communication skills among students at non-linguistic universities. The author substantiates the relevance and significance of the research topic. It is postulated that in the conditions of a systematic reduction in the volume of foreign language teaching hours in Russian universities, there is a need to reorient the teaching model to external “rails”, and, consequently, to select the appropriate methodological (technological) tools. At the same time, according to the author, it must be based on an interdisciplinary approach, which involves the retransmission of professional knowledge in a foreign language format, and, consequently, the effective formation and development of a priority set of skills. A hypothesis is put forward and arguments are given to support it that the technology of content-based integrated learning can be used for the purposes of forming and developing the most significant among them - professional foreign language communication skills. The content aspect is substantiated through the prism of an authentic video content resource, and practical examples are given. Additionally, the basic framework (algorithm) of pedagogical work is formulated within the framework of a content-oriented approach. It concludes that in conditions of thoughtful and, no less important, adaptive, process-based learning with the help of the proposed technology, it is possible to achieve the expected subject and meta-subject results in teaching a foreign language to students of non-linguistic universities.
