Одним из самых известных и феноменологически наиболее полно описанных состояний измененного сознания является гипноз. Природа этого явления остается изученной и понятой далеко не полностью. Появление мощного психологического аппарата, современное состояние нейро- и психофизиологической науки, внедрение специализированной электрофизиологической аппаратуры и средств вычислительной техники позволяет проводить как интенсивные, так и экстенсивные исследования нейро- и психофизиологических механизмов гипноза и сходных с ним состояний.

Тем не менее систематическое и целенаправленное изучение этого явления представляет сложную проблему для нейро- и психофизиологов, поскольку даже среди психологов, психиатров и психотерапевтов не существует единых подходов к оценке, а тем более – классификации как самого гипнотического состояния, так и его этапов. Этот тезис исчерпывающе иллюстрируется значительным разбросом в определениях и квалификациях гипноза и его природы.
