Статья представляет собой обзор ранних и недавних теоретических и эмпирических работ по экокультурной психологии. Используя свой экокультурный подход, я рассматриваю: 1) происхождение сходств и различий в поведении человека в разных культурах и 2) взаимосвязь между культурой и поведением. Мой экокультурный подход постулирует, что: 1) базовые психологические процессы являются универсальными для человека как вида; 2) поведение является адаптивным к контекстам как экологическим, так и социополитическим. Эти предположения позволяют концептуализировать поведение на культурном и индивидуальном уровнях как отдельные феномены, где культура существует вне отдельных индивидов, ее носителей, но при этом остается также включенной во всех индивидов посредством двух основных процессов культурной трансмиссии: инкультурации и аккультурации. Следовательно, при таком подходе культура является одновременно как независимой, так и организмической переменной, что позволяет проводить эмпирические исследования на двух уровнях — в пределах каждого из уровней (т. е. классические этнографические исследования и исследования индивидуальных различий) — и осуществлять сравнения между ними. Однако основным преимуществом этого подхода является отсутствие необходимости использования каких-либо post hoc интерпретаций поведенческих сходств и различий между культурами, поскольку для их прогнозирования могут использоваться данные культурного уровня. Экокультурный подход сам по себе является как культурным, так и сравнительным подходом, что обеспечивает кросс-культурное понимание человеческого многообразия.
