Давид А.Шапиро, доктор философии, с 1977 по 1994 год являлся руководителем Совета по медицинским исследованиям, Совета по со­циальным исследованиям и Отдела прикладной психологии университе­та Шеффилда (Великобритания). В последнее время эта группа рабо­тает в университете Лидса, где доктор Шапиро стал профессором кли­нической психологии, директором. Центра исследований психотерапии и руководителем Центра по исследованиям и развитию Общества пси­хического здоровья города Лидс. Он также являлся президентом Общес­тва психотерапевтических исследований (1993-1994), редактором жур­налов: «British Journal of Clinical Psychology» (1980-1985) и «Psychotherapy Research» (1989-1993).

Майкл Стертап получил степень доктора философии в Лондонском университете в 1984 году, изучал клиническую психологию в универси­тете Саррей, работал в Национальной службе здравоохранения. С 1988 года является сотрудником Шеффилдской психотерапевтической груп­пы, преподает в университете Уэльса (Бангор) и занимается исследо­ваниями в области эффективности когнитивной психотерапии при лечении шизофрении.

Сто семнадцать клиентов, страдающих, депрессией, были рас­пределены на группы по степени тяжести и прошли по 8 или по 16 сеансов когнитивно-поведенческой (КП) либо психодинамически-межличностной (ПМ) психотерапии. В целом КП и ПМ дали сходные результаты, независимо от продолжитель­ности лечения и тяжести депрессии. Однако некоторые пре­имущества КП можно было наблюдать по «Опроснику про­текания депрессии Бека» (Beck Depression Inventory). Мы не имеем оснований полагать, что КП дала более скорый эф­фект, чем ПМ, равно как и то, что сравнительные резуль­таты каждого из вышеуказанных методов лечения зависят от степени тяжести депрессии. Также курс из 16 сеансов не показал общего преимущества над курсом из 8 сеансов. Од­нако состояние клиентов с относительно тяжелой формой депрессии улучшилось в большей степени после 16 сеансов, чем после 8.
