Синестезия всё чаще определяется как “неврологическое состояние”, при котором перцептивный стимул или стимул с понятийным содержанием вызывает атипичную когнитивную реакцию (например, Asher и др., 2009; Simner и др., 2009; Brang и др., 2011). Судя по значению, прежние определения синестезии сосредотачивались на её феноменологии – например, восприятие музыки в цвете (музыкально-цветовая синестезия) или видение напечатанных в ахроматической гамме букв или цифр окрашенными в соответствующие цвета.
