Dialogue with L.S. Vygotsky on the problems of modern surdopedagogy

Abstract

Although this article has already been published in the 'Defectology' journal (2, 1998), its subject remains topical. The author reviews the history of views on deaf language development and the role of sign language in this process. The latter is regarded as a 'native language' of deaf people, meaning that it is acquired without any special kind of teaching. The article gives a detailed analysis of L.S. Vygotsky's views on the problem of teaching deaf children and on the role of sign language in the teaching process. Along with these topics, the modern problems of teaching deaf people in Russia and abroad are discussed as well.
