The psychology of prejudice in the multicultural learning context

Abstract

The study of stereotypes and prejudice, as well as of ways to combat them, is very important in the con¬temporary globalizing world. However, despite the ongoing globalization, as well as increasing access to the Internet and other information sources, there are still many blind spots in the knowledge that people of differ¬ent nations have about each other. To ensure the harmonious coexistence of European countries, it is impor¬tant to interact not only at political and economics levels, but at interpersonal level as well. To reach this goal, we need to understand the nature and mechanisms of prejudice and stereotypes that lay the grounds for inter¬national hostility. In order for anti-discrimination policy to be successful, it needs to include not only the spe¬cific legal measures preventing discrimination, but also measures to fight prejudice and stereotypes that form the basis for national tension, racism, and discrimination. An important role in this process can be played by intercultural education, which aims to facilitate the mutual understanding by people of different countries or nations, and to mitigate or combat prejudices and stereotypes.
