Abstract

Context and relevance. The interest towards multicultural counseling issues is growing among Russian psychologists. This interest, however, is accompanied by a range of research and implementation problems. Objective. Analyze the perception of studying multicultural counseling among counseling psychologists. Research design. The study was based on qualitative methodology and conducted by the method of focus groups. Methods and materials. 18 Russian counselors participated in the study. The data were analyzed by phenomenological approach. Results. The research results demonstrate that participants perceive studying multicultural counseling as a possibility for personal and professional growth: they observe the positive dynamics of multicultural and basic counseling competencies, the emerging of a new identity of a cross-cultural psychologist, consider multicultural competencies comprehensive in counseling. Conclusions. The development of multicultural counseling on the Russian agenda may be considered a pressing professional and research task, and its solution will contribute to the enrichment of professional tools, reaching sustainable counseling outcomes and the growth of counselors’ professional competence.
