Abstract

Context and relevance. The article examines the possible connection between a manuscript notebook dated 1813 from Andrey Baranovsky’s collection and the early school-Lyceum layer of the Pushkinian tradition of the rose, known from Ivan Pushchin’s testimony about a lost verse exercise written during Nikolai Koshansky’s lesson. Objective. To define the scholarly status of the text signed with the surname “Pushkin” without conflating the problem of authorship with that of manuscript evidence. Methods and materials. The study uses historical-literary, textual and source-critical methods: it compares the known versions of “The Rose” from 1815 and 1817–1819, the academic commentary, Pushchin’s testimony, the composition of the notebook and the oral history of its transmission from Yuri Meyer to Baranovsky. Results. The analysis shows that the Baranovsky text cannot be identified with the canonical “Rose” or automatically included in Pushkin’s corpus. Its form, theme, date and signature nevertheless constitute a significant set of features. Conclusions. The article concludes that the material should be published according to archaeographic standards and subjected to further paleographic and codicological examination.
