The linguistic representation of the Russian village world in the books by V.N. Krupin
Abstract
Context and relevance. The Russian village is one of the central themes in the works of the Orthodox writer and village dweller Vladimir Nikolaevich Krupin. In the field of literary studies, Krupin's work has been thoroughly examined in the context of the traditions of "village prose" in the second half of the 20th century, as well as in relation to the "soil" movement in Russian literature. However, from a linguistic perspective, the image of the village is not fully represented, and there is no comprehensive, systematic, or linguistic analysis of one of the central symbols in the writer's works. Objective. To determine the boundaries and composition of the lexical-semantic field "Village" as a fragment of V.N. Krupin's linguistic worldview, and to identify the influence of syntagmatic connections on the semantic structure of an utterance. Hypothesis. In V.N. Krupin's stories, the lexeme "village" serves as a marker of socio-cultural space and identity, is a text-forming unit, and varies semantically depending on the character, plot, and temporal context. It forms a lexico-semantic field with a specific semantic structure, aesthetic meaning, and implicit implications. Methods and materials. The study used general scientific methods: analysis, synthesis, observation, and visualization; linguistic methods: descriptive, contrastive, and structural; as well as specific (specialized) methods: contextual and semantic-pragmatic analysis, the method of studying dictionary definitions, and the corpus-based empirical approach. The article is based on the prose works of V.N. Krupin, specifically the collections of autobiographical stories "The Sea of Everyday Life" and "A Book for Friends," as well as dictionaries and corpus resources. Results. The lexical-semantic field "Village" includes the following components: the core, represented by the hypernym "village"; the central lexemes that form the core of the dictionary within the field and include synonymous and antonymous series; and the periphery, which is divided into close and distant periphery. The peripheral units of the lexical-semantic field "Village" often overlap with other lexical-semantic fields, such as "Motherland," "Water," and "Nature." Conclusions. The linguistic analysis has shown that the lexeme village rarely functions as a background for the characters' actions; instead, it often serves as a marker of identity, and in the climactic episodes, it manifests itself as an indicator of changes in the relationships between the characters and their living conditions. Nostalgic and even critical remarks are repeated as a refrain: the village is a symbol of decline.
