Abstract

A unique survey of the psychological characteristics of five-year-olds, conducted in 2003 on the basis of preschool institutions in Moscow, is described. The survey was carried out in several areas: diagnosis of communicative, cognitive, volitional, activity areas of mental development of five-year-old children. A brief description of the methods used in the survey is given. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the survey results revealed a modern picture of the level of mental development of five-year-olds. In conclusion, concrete ways to create and improve conditions for optimal development of preschool children are outlined.
