Level-based nature of understanding scientific text

Abstract

The contribution analyzes the characteristics of scientific text, its features and related peculiarities of its understanding. We carried out a research aimed at identification of level-based nature of text understanding and of possibility of its apprehension, finding the mechanisms which facilitate the effective understanding of a text. The hypothesis was that teaching of rational and generalized methods of solving textual problems to students, basing on level-based understanding of scientific text, will lead to its adequate apprehension. 326 students of psychology of different years (aged from 17 to 22) took part in the experimental research. Confirming experiment identified non-developedness of skills of working with scientific text, low level of its understanding. In the process of forming experiment the authors identified the strategies of understanding scientific text ensured by a specific system of educational actions; found a level-based mechanism of the general strategy of text understanding.
