Abstract

We describe the impact of paternal deprivation of varying duration on the formation of body image in preschool children. We present the results of comparative analysis of the body image in children from intact families, children brought up only by mother (without a father from birth), in children who lived with their father and mother until the age of three (in divorced families), in children who lived with their mother and without a father until the age of three (and then with a stepfather), and in children living without their parents throughout childhood (brought up in an orphanage). We describe the revealed features of the body image and self-image in children from different types of families. We show the specificity of the influence of period during which the child was brought up without a father, on the image of the child's body. The results can be used to develop counseling and correctional programs for families and children in order to reduce the traumatic impact of paternal deprivation on the self-image in preschool children.
