Psychological Characteristics of Professional Activity of the Arbitration Court Judges

Abstract

The aim of this research was to study opinions of the arbitration court judges on the quality of interaction between the parties in the process of court proceedings as well as the identification of possible causes of psychological discomfort and stress of the judges. Forty-nine judges (21 male and 28 female) of the Arbitration Court of St. Petersburg and Leningrad region participated in the survey. The study allowed examining attitudes of the judges towards their professional activities and towards representatives of the parties, identifying specific emotional states during the trials, describing the stressors and situations that cause the greatest psychological difficulties for the judges as well as ways of resolving those. Results indicate the need for forming a psychological preparedness for the judging activities as well as the need for development of communicative methods of interaction and for enhancement of the psychological competence.
