Moderating Effects of Social Support Under Conditions of Partial Group Isolation

879

Abstract

The article provides the results of experimental research aimed at revelation of peculiarities of manifestation of moderating effects of social support under conditions of partial group isolation. According to the study hypothesis it was supposed that perceived social support in conditions of relative group isolation moderates negative influence of isolation on group members according to the "main-effect" model, whereas moderating features of index of degree of realization of expectations concerning social support are described by the "buffer-effects" model. 326 young males ¬ the cadets of the Military Academy — 16 to 21 years old — participated in the experiment. They were divided into two groups: the experimental group (N = 170) and the control group (N = 156). It is empirically proved that available social support mitigates negative impact of isolation independently of the extent of isolation of a group while the level of realization of expectations regarding social support reveals with the increase of the extent of group isolation.
