Predictors of financial anxiety in the situation of retirement
Abstract
Context and relevance. In the retirement situation, pensioners' financial anxiety increases, reducing their level of psychological and financial well-being. The relevance of studying financial anxiety as a personality trait and as a state is associated with the identification and assessment of the individual significance of stressors that cause it (macroeconomic phenomena), as well as the role of the personal characteristics of pensioners that contribute to coping with its various manifestations.
Objective. The goal of the research was to highlight differences in retirees’ predictors of coping with financial anxiety (as a state and as a property).
Hypothesis. Subjectively perceived macroeconomic events that determine the severity of financial anxiety’s different aspects, as well as factors and mechanisms of coping with them, may differ. But both financial anxiety and corresponding anxious state of personality may be caused by the same events. The severity of financial experiences may be regulated by the manifestation of personality’s subjective qualities – viability, independence and self-assurance.
Methods and materials. At the main stage of research, retirees participated (N = 151), among them: working (54,3%) and unemployed (45,7%), women in the age of 58-75 and men at the age of 63-75 years old. Financial anxiety was estimated with a short version of the "Financial Anxiety Scale" (Burchell and Shapiro) and the author's questionnaires "Financial worries" and "Personal financial anxiety scale". Personality traits were analyzed with a set of methods: "Hardiness Survey" by S. Maddi (adapt. by E.N. Osin), the General Self-Efficacy Scale by R. Schwarzer, M. Jerusalem (adapt. by V. Romek) and the author’s questionnaire "Macroeconomical factors of financial anxiety" (T.V. Drobycheva).
Results. The retiree’s financial anxiety is influenced by dynamic macroeconomic factors, which they perceive as potential sources of financial worry. Risk management, acceptance, and self-assessed material well-being as indicators of resilience are considered as predictors of financial anxiety. Risk acceptance, financial independence, and a positive assessment of the government's foreign policy are also predictors of personal financial anxiety.
Conclusions. A comparison of predictors of financial anxiety (as a trait or a state) revealed similarities in pensioners' perception of macroeconomic phenomena as stressors and differences in the personal characteristics of pensioners that contribute to their coping with expressed worries.
