Internet in the Daily Life of an Elderly Person

Abstract

This work is devoted to the peculiarities of using the Internet by elderly people. The relevance of the topic is dictated by modern social trends, particularly the transition of the most important aspects of life to the online format. If today's youth does not experience difficulties in using the Internet, then representatives of the older generation, who grew up in a different information space, may have certain problems. In such a situation, it is necessary to find out how successfully elderly people can adapt to new conditions and how difficult this adaptation is for them. This study was conducted in the format of a survey-interview among participants in the Mobile Literacy Training program, implemented based on the State Autonomous Institution of the Novosibirsk Region "Novosibirsk Regional Gerontology Center". The results demonstrated the subjective perception of the respondents of the digitalization of society and their attitude to information technology. The authors determined how much time an elderly person spends on average on the Internet, what services and social networks they use, what type of content they consume and on what topics, as well as the convenience of using the Internet in comparison with alternative sources of information. The article will be of interest to specialists working in social service institutions and researchers studying the issues of elderly people’s presence in the online space.
