Creation of Videos by Adolescents as a Tool of Patriotic and Civic Education in Middle School

Abstract

The article considers the activity of video creation by adolescents as a new pedagogical tool for the purposes of civil and patriotic education in the middle school. 20 students from the 8th grade (School No.4, town Kashira of Moscow Region) created 10 videos about their relatives who were participants or witnessed the events of the Great Patriotic War as well as video interviews with local veterans. The videos were based on the documentary material of interviews conducted with them. The goals of creating videos are to strengthen the connection between generations, instill a sense of pride for the country, preserve the memory of historical events and teach the younger generation to evaluate adequately the events of the Great Patriotic War. The process of video creation by schoolers was multi-staged and included training in interviewing, learning the skills to present information and express thoughts clearly in front of the camera. Also, the adolescents collected, interpreted and analyzed documentary material as well as the developed digital and technical skills (the ability to handle equipment, fix the light, shoot and edit video). The adolescents noted that, thanks to the activity of video creation, organized in the form of a project, they improved their teamwork skills, learned to interpret the historical context of the events of the Great Patriotic War. They felt involved into the history of the country, became closer to their families, became more conscious and responsible. Teachers and specialists who worked with adolescents noted their new positive emotional experiences and responses as well as involvement into the activity and topic. What is more, schoolers began to express their proactive civic and patriotic positions more often. The videos became part of the archive of the school museum, they were included into excursions around the museum, and they were also used as the basis for classroom meetings and “Conversations about Important Things” dedicated to Victory Day.
