Понятие соматизации было предложено психоаналитиком  В.Штекелем  в 1943 году (Steckel, 1943) для обозначения конверсионных расстройств, то есть истероформных соматических нарушений,  рассматриваемых в психоанализе как символическое выражение бессознательного конфликта, как правило, сексуального по своей природе. Согласно Штекелю, Соматизация – это телесные нарушения, возникающие как знак глубинного невроза (deeр-seated neurosis) и прежде всего – расстройства осознавания человеком собственного состояния. Так, истерический паралич рук мог трактоваться в психоанализе как символическое выражение бессознательного конфликта между желанием мастурбировать и внутренним запретом относительно такого рода действия. Священник, согрешивший с женой своего друга, теряет голос и не может читать проповеди. Однако далеко не всегда конфликты носят сексуальную природу. П.Фидлер (Fiedler, 1998) описывает конверсионные расстройства у солдата, попавшего под обстрел и выразившего готовность потерять свою правую руку, но остаться живым. После боя он попал в госпиталь с конверсионным параличом правой руки. У другого солдата, находящегося в мучительном конфликте между чувством долга и страхом смерти,  возникает паралич ног.  В таких случаях можно было говорить о конверсии или соматизации глубинного психологического конфликта.
