Метафоры часто используются учителями в качестве удобного инструмента для объяснений в процессе обучения, поскольку предоставляют человеку возможность дать чему-либо имя, придать смысл и понять обстоятельства, в которых он оказался. Однако и собственно процесс преподавания концептуализируется учителями посредством метафоры. Как подчеркивают Collins и Green, метафора позволяет свести целую философию обучения к одному понятному образу. Так, например, метафора учителя как привратника, хранителя ворот (gatekeeper) иллюстрирует идею, что учитель — центральная фигура, формирующая (и оформляющая) процесс получения учеником знания. Выявление метафор и моделей, которые используют учителя для понимания обучения и преподавания, позволяет увидеть личностно значимые содержания, понять, как выглядит реальность в их представлении, а это очень важно, поскольку именно этими представлениями (образами, метафорическими паттернами) учителя неосознанно руководствуются, обдумывая происходящее в их работе.
